[188]💡How to Improve Lighting for Vertical Smartphone Videos

💡How to improve the lighting for vertical smartphone videography? Get the gear from these links...

Without lighting, your videos can look dull and flat.

One light is better, but you can still get uneven shadows.

However, with two lights, it is perfection. The lighting is both nice and even.

Here's my setup:

  • Lights: I use Tofu LED lights. They're a bit pricey, but I LOVE the external knobs for easy brightness adjustments, and they flip around quickly for lighting the other side.

    • Budget-friendly option: Ulanzi VL49 - great quality without the bells and whistles.
  • Tripod: You'll need something to hold your phone and those lights! I use the Ulanzi JJ02 - it's a tripod, selfie stick, AND camera grip, plus it comes with a wireless clicker! 🤯

Why good lighting matters:

How to improve the lighting for vertical smartphone videography? See? Without lights I look OK, but very dull. Let's turn on the one light. Looks better, right? But not quite there yet. Now let's turn on the second light. Perfect. Now everything is nice and even. The lights are use are these Tofu LED lights? I love them because of these external knobs so that I can adjust the brightness easily. I also like how I can flip them around very quickly whenever I want to shoot the front. I must admit that the Tofu lights are a little bit expensive, so you can try the Ulanzi VL 49 a lot more cheaper, but it doesn't have the external knobs and it doesn't flip easily. Anyway, you can get whichever one you like from my promo link below. But wait, you still need one more thing, a tripod that can hold your phone and the two lights. This one is also a selfie stick and the camera grip plus a wireless clicker. Get yours from my link below.

Initial Idea:

How to improve lighting for vertical smartphone videography?

See? Without lights, I look okay, but very dull. Like I'm hiding in the shadows or something.

(Show yourself with one light)

Then I tried using one light. Better, right? But it's still not quite there. One side of my face is bright, the other's still in the shadows.

(Show yourself with two lights)

Now, THIS is what I'm talking about! With two lights, the lighting is perfect. Everything's nice and even, no more weird shadows.

(Show the Tofu lights)

The lights I use are these Tofu LED lights. I love 'em because they have these little knobs that make it super easy to change the brightness and color.

(Demonstrate adjusting the knobs)

See? Like, if I want it brighter, just turn this knob. Want it warmer or cooler? Easy peasy.

(Show flipping the lights to the front)

And check this out – I can just flip them around like this when I'm filming with my selfie camera. So convenient!

(Show the Ulanzi VL49)

Now, these Tofu lights are a little pricey, I'll admit. If you're on a budget, the Ulanzi VL49 is a great option. It doesn't have the knobs or flip thing, but it'll still give you awesome lighting.

(Show the Ulanzi JJ02 with lights and phone attached)

Oh, and one more thing! You'll need something to hold your phone and the lights. This is the Ulanzi JJ02. It's a mini tripod, selfie stick, AND a camera grip all in one! Plus, it comes with this little clicker so you can start and stop recording without even touching your phone. Pretty cool, huh?

(Talking about when to use this setup)

And you know what? This setup isn't just for filming videos like this. It's awesome for vlogging when you're out and about, doing live streams, even just for making your video calls look better. Seriously, good lighting makes a HUGE difference!
